Abstract Background Human rhinovirus (HRV) infection can also cause lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs). We aimed to investigate the proportion and characteristics of severe HRV among children under 5 years who were hospitalized due LRTI. Methods The medical records reviewed retrospectively in patients caused by LRTI from January 1, 2016 December 31, 2020, at Samsung Medical Center, Seoul, Korea. Patients older than 90 days younger old included. with co-infection other viruses or bacteria excluded. cancer Severe was defined as following: need for high flow oxygenation, mechanical ventilation, intensive care unit (ICU) admission. Of cases, 18 (15.5%) showed a course. group compared non-severe (9.5 vs. 19.5 months, p=0.001). In LRTI, 11 (11/18, 61%) had underlying diseases; bronchopulmonary dysplasia bronchiolitis obliterans accounted largest (7/11, 63.6%). Six (6/18, 33.3%) required ventilation. note, there seven previously healthy (7/18, 38.9%) diagnosed those seven, three asthma later during follow-up. When divided into (n=61) disease (n=55) groups, course observed 11% 20%, respectively (p=0.205). There no fatal case. Conclusion certain pediatric patient, especially diseases young-aged children.
